In 2010, the Berlinale Talent Campus #8 (February 13-18) explores the true sense of collaborative filmmaking and welcomes 350 Talents from 95 countries. Focusing on Cinema Needs Talent ?Looking for the Right People, this year’s programme has a broad range to offer. Read further for a taste of the upcoming Campus programme:
Cinema Needs Talent ?Looking
for the Right People
The opening panel addresses this year’s theme
straight-up, and features famed panelists such as Isabel Coixet (MAP OF THE
SOUNDS OF TOKYO, MY LIFE WITHOUT ME), Stephen Daldry (three-time Oscar?nominee
for THE READER, THE HOURS and BILLY ELLIOT) and Mike Medavoy (legendary film
producer, including SHUTTER ISLAND, officially selected for the Berlinale 2010).
Each will share their experience in writing, producing and teaming up with
essential crew members, whether it be sound designers, screenwriters or actors.
Coixet, Daldry and Medavoy will talk about those key individuals who greatly
inspired them and brought creative drive to their film projects. Sunday, Feb 14

Cinema Unlimited: Intercontinental Connections gathers filmmakers from four continents, who successfully worked beyond the regional borders they originate from and have become part of an international filmmaking network: the Iranian director Rafi Pitts (THE HUNTER, Berlinale Competition), Cameroonian-born and France-based director Jean-Marie Teno (THE COLONIAL MISUNDERSTANDING, SACRED PLACES), Argentinian director Natalia Smirnoff (PUZZLE, Berlinale Competition) and the two-time National Film Award winner Madhusree Dutta, one of India's leading documentary filmmakers. Filmmakers Guide to Cross Media
New technologies are having a
profound impact on film production and storytelling. The Campus' series “The
Indie Filmmakers Guide to Cross Media?invites pioneers of the cross media
movement and experts from interactive and immersive storytelling, to describe
how to build story worlds that span multiple platforms and engage audiences in
powerful new ways. Additionally, these experts address issues such as how to
access new financing sources, marketing strategies and distribution
possibilities that take into account cross media models. With Alexandre Brachet,
Karol Martesko-Fenster, Michel Reilhac, Lance Weiler and others. Moderated by
Liz Rosenthal (Power to the Pixel).

Mexican Filmmakers Joining Forces
The centenary of the Mexican
Revolution (1910) has brought Mexican filmmakers together on a giant film
journey, resulting in the omnibus film REVOLUCI?. The team of filmmakers gather
at this panel to jointly raise the question, what has the revolution brought
today’s Mexican society and what this turning point is worth in terms of
contemporary Mexico. With filmmakers Carlos Reygadas, Diego Luna, Fernando
Eimbcke, Amat Escalante, Mariana Chenillo, Gerardo Naranjo, Rodrigo Pla,
Patricia Riggen, Rodrigo Garcia and producer Pablo Cruz. Tuesday, Feb 16 ?HAU

A marvel of traditional craftsmanship, the
animation industry is currently a popular genre with young and old alike.
Ground-breaking animators and animation filmmakers Merlin Crossingham (Aardman
Studios, CHICKEN RUN, WALLACE AND GROMIT), Anita Killi (ANGRY MAN, Berlinale
Generation) and Mait Laas (NukuFilm Studios, LOST AND FOUND, episode
GENERATIO, Campus alumnus 2004) present their work and give an insider’s look of
the craftsmanship and team spirit required to make outstanding animation films.

Alexandre Desplat began his triumphant success around the world
in 2003 with the wonderful neo-classical and haunting score of THE GIRL WITH A
PEARL EARRING and with his Silver Bear-winning score for THE BEAT THAT MY HEART
SKIPPED (2005), followed by THE QUEEN, THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON and
this year’s THE GHOST WRITER (Berlinale Competition). By using excerpts
of the diverse films he has worked on, Desplat discusses the ways of introducing
the mood of a film, the timing of a score and how to heighten suspenseful

“Q?/STRONG>
The man who has created some of the most iconic and memorable
sets in the history of film: Sir Ken Adam, production designer and architect, is
the person responsible for the James Bond aesthetic and is the recipient of two
Oscars ?for Stanley Kubrick’s BARRY LYNDON and for Nicholas Hytner’s THE
MADNESS OF KING GEORGE. In conversation with Sir Christopher Frayling, Adam will
illustrate how production design enriches the visual storytelling of a film,
adding narrative layers to the landscape of spaces and things surrounding the

Life Through A Lens features acclaimed director of photography Christian Berger, who worked with Michael Haneke on the award-winning THE WHITE RIBBON (Oscar?nominated for cinematography), THE PIANO TEACHER and CACH?as well as with filmmaker Amos Gitai. Berger will give an in-depth look into his style of working and how he manages to surprise directors and producers with images beyond their expectation, lending the final film its very own mood and intensity. This master class with renowned Dutch actress Johanna ter
Steege (THE VANISHING, European Film Award for Best Supporting Actress, TOT
ZIENS, Special Prize Locarno International Film Festival, DEAR EMMA, SWEET B?E)
is part of the new Talent Actors Stage, which aims at giving actors practical
experience through the collaboration with professionals from other film
disciplines. Johanna ter Steege will shine her light on how actors can decide
which directors to work with and which scripts to choose, but also advise and
show directors how they can encourage, support and stimulate actors to draw out

Darlings
Deepening the storyteller’s understanding of merging filmed
moments into rich cinematic experiences, Susan Korda editor of the
Oscar?nominated FOR ALL MANKIND, director, writer and lecturer at NYU Tisch
School of the Arts, will give advice on how you can kill your darlings in the
editing process without killing collaborations in the montage stage of

The Berlinale is not just home to seasoned and legendary filmmakers, the festival rejoices year after year in the discovery of new films from emerging ones. This year, a record of 45 Campus alumni with 33 films have been selected for one of the sections of the 60th Berlin International Film Festival. To mention just a few:
In Competition, Suzan Hande Gunery (Campus 2005) edited HONEY from Turkish director Semih Kaplanoglŭ. Fernando Eimbcke (Campus 2003) and Amat Escalante (Campus 2004) form part of the Mexican directors ensemble involved in REVOLUCI?, which is being screened in the Berlinale Special programme. IMANI, directed by Ugandese filmmaker Caroline Kamya (Campus 2007) is selected for the Berlinale Forum.
Berlinale Panorama screens FUCKING DIFFERENT SAO PAULO, an omnibus series for which Brazilians Rene Guerra (Campus 2006), Rodrigo Diaz Diaz (Campus 2009), Monica Palazzo (Campus 2007) and Joana Galvao (Campus 2008) directed their short film.
SUSA, from Georgian director and producer Rusudan Pirveli
(Campus 2007) is featuring in Berlinale Generation, after the film was
part of the Talent Project Market in 2007. Two other Campus alumni joined
Rusudan Pirveli to make SUSA: production designer Guram Navrozashvili (Campus
2006) and screenwriter George Chalauri (Campus 2007).
German Film section Perspektive Deutsches Kino opens with RUN IF YOU CAN. Written and directed by Dietrich Br?gemann (Campus 2007) his sister Anna Br?geman (Campus 2007) stars in this film.
THE MATH TEST (SUHAKSIHUM) selected for Berlinale Shorts, is also the result of a Campus collaboration: Korean producer Kihyun Kim and Japanese sound designer Midori Hirano met at the Campus back in 2008.
Several of these filmmakers take centre stage during the upcoming Campus to talk about the stumbling blocks that roughed up their filmmaking journeys, giving helpful tips on getting films through trying times and how they managed to return to the Berlinale on the panel Happy Returns ?The Future After the Campus. Talent Campus Buenos Aires
The Universidad del Cine will host
the fifth edition of the Talent Campus Buenos Aires (April 10-13, 2010), taking
place during BAFICI - Buenos Aires International Film Festival (April 7-18,
2010). This year, the Talent Campus Buenos Aires will highlight
Documentary cinema and includes for the first time a Campus
Studio programme, where Talents will be working hands-on with editors, script
editors, and high-quality equipment. Up-and-coming filmmakers from South America
are invited to apply. Deadline for the application is February 16,
2010.

The 31st Durban International Film
Festival (July 22 - August 2, 2010) has announced the 3rd edition of Talent
Campus Durban (July 23 ?27, 2010). The 3rd Talent Campus Durban theme
Focusing on Africa: Unleashing Talent in 2010 will centre
activities on developing and strengthening partnerships between African
filmmakers. Filmmakers from Africa are invited to apply, deadline for
applications is March 15, 2010.

The third goEast-Project Market (Wiesbaden, April 22 ?27,
2010) is an event set up for the exchange of project ideas hosted by goEast in
cooperation with the Robert Bosch Stiftung. It is an opportunity for young
filmmakers from Germany and Eastern Europe to present their ideas and find
potential partners to form a team that can apply for the Co-Production Prize for
Young German and Eastern European Filmmakers 2010. The deadline for applications
